CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Grace

My alarm sounds waking me from my sleep. I am still exhausted, probably from the emotional war that I went through yesterday as well as Nick waking me up after midnight due to the photograph of him with that woman. I was shocked when I opened my door last night, seeing Vincent and Alex standing at my door and a visibly shaken Nick gutted me. I could tell he was on the precipice of another panic attack and the way he clutched his brother was evidence of his fragile emotional state.

I hadn’t planned on letting him in, but I also didn’t want him to wake the entire palace. Seeing him like that gutted me and I realized that he was torturing himself far more than I was torturing him. That wasn’t the kind of relationship I wanted anyway. I didn’t want to have a relationship where we held power over the other. I wanted to be an equal partner, which is why Nick’s dismissal of what I heard hurt so badly.

I told him that I forgave him, and I do, so now it’s time to move on and build from there. I don’t want to be one of those people that continuously throws old issues in their significant other’s face. Once I decided I was over something, I was going to put it behind me and that is exactly how I am planning on handling things. Of course, it will probably more easily said than done but I am going to try to keep that attitude.

I step into the shower quickly after realizing I have only twenty minutes before I am supposed to be meeting Nick for breakfast. I am sure he has been up for a while dealing with all of the fallout from the picture and press last night. I consciously choose to ignore the newspaper that is laying on the table in my living room almost certain I know what it is going to tell me. The funny part of the whole situation is that there were more Prince Nicholas sightings last night, even though he was sitting in my living room talking to me. It just further proved that you can’t always believe the gossip.

I slip on a cream blouse and a grey skirt that hit just below my knee and paired it with nude heels. I had put my hair up in a pony tail so I wouldn’t have to worry about it getting messed up as I go in and out of cars. The knock on my door comes at exactly seven thirty which makes me chuckle. I open the door to find Nick standing before me looking incredibly handsome but incredibly tired as well.

“You look exhausted.” I say honestly.

Nick shrugs and gives me a small smile. “It was a long night.”

“Everything okay now?” I ask as I close my door and take his arm as he guides me to breakfast.

Nick blows out a low breath. “Yes and no. Apparently I underestimated the press’ interest in seeing me look like a cad.
